Making a yarn snowflake is quite easy! It usually is 2 or 3 rounds at the most, and built of simple, basic stitches. If you are just learning to crochet, you should be able to do these easily!

Each snowflake is made with these basic steps
1. initial loop - usually a ch 4 and join type of thing
2. first round - this is your base round, usually sets up how many points are going to be
3. points round - sometimes the first round can do this as well, this is where you do the decorative points

Here are some basic rounds that you can mix and match.
Initial Loop:

  • ch [3 or 4 or 5] join to form loop. The bigger the loop, the more points you can make
  • Round 1 choices

Solid bases - strong solid center, less lacy
    1. (no initial loop) ch 4, [8 or 11] dc in 4th ch from hook. This creates a tighter center, leaving a very small "hole" in the middle.
    2. ch 3, [8 or 11] dc in loop
    3. ch 1, [6 or 8 or 12] sc in loop, join with sl st

ch 1 space bases - nice open base, easy to make points in the spaces. For each of these bases, you will need to sl st to the next sp before starting the points round.
    4. ch 3 (counts as first hdc, ch1), (hdc, ch 1) 5 times, join with sl st (6 hdc, c1)
    5. ch 4 (counts as first dc, ch1), (dc, ch 1) 5 times, join with sl st (6 dc, c1)
    6. ch 3 (counts as first hdc, ch1), (hdc, ch 1) 7 times, join with sl st (8 hdc, c1)
    7. ch 4 (counts as first dc, ch1), (dc, ch 1) 7 times, join with sl st (8 dc, c1)
    8. ch 3 (counts as first hdc, ch1), (hdc, ch 1) 11 times, join with sl st (12 hdc, c1)
    9. ch 4 (counts as first dc, ch1), (dc, ch 1) 11 times, join with sl st (12 dc, c1)

loop bases - For each of these bases, you will need to sl st to the next sp before starting the points round.
    10. ch 1, (sc, ch 3) 6 times, join with sl st (6 loops)
    11. ch 1, (sc, ch 3) 8 times, join with sl st (8 loops)
    12. ch 1, (sc, ch 3) 12 times, join with sl st (12 loops)

    first round as points round
    13. ch 3, (dc 2 times in loop, ch3-picot) [5 or 6 or 8] times, join with sl st, finish off.

    Round 2 Choices

    Points Round choices
This is where you will do any number of picots
ch3-picot: ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook
ch3sc-picot: ch 3, sc in 3rd ch from hook
3Gpicot: group of 3 ch3-picot: (ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook) 3 times, sl st in first ch3-picot ch

    Use for all bases
    a. Ch 1, (sc, ch 1, ch3sc-picot) in each st or loop around, sl st in 1st sc. Finish off
    b. Ch 1, (sc, ch [2,3,4], ch3sc-picot, ch [1,2,3]) in each st or sp around, sl st in 1st sc or sp or loop. Finish off

    Use for 10, 11, or 12
    c. Ch 1, (sc, ch3-picot,sc) in each loop around. Finish off
    d. Ch 1, (sc, ch [2,3,4], ch3-picot, ch [1,2,3], sc) in each loop around. Finish off
    e. Ch 1, (sc, ch 2, 3Gpicot, ch 1, sc) in each loop around. Finish off

    Use bases 1 to 3 (with 8 only), 4 to 7, or 10, 11
    f. ch 1, sc in same sp or loop, ch 4, 3Gpicot, ch 3, (sc in next st or sp, ch 4, 3Gpicot, ch 3,) around, sl st in 1st sc. Finish off.

    Use bases 1 to 3 (with 12 only), 8, 9, 12
    g. ch 1, sc in joining st, ch 4, 3Gpicot, ch 3, skip next st (sc in next st, ch 4, 3Gpicot, ch 3, skip next sc) around, sl st in 1st sc. Finish off.

    Use for bases 2, 3, 6 to 12
    h. Ch 1, sc in joining st, ch 4, 3Gpicot, ch 3, sc in next st, ch 2, ch3sc-picot, ch 1, (sc in next st, ch 4, 3Gpicot, ch 3, sc in next st, ch 2, ch3sc-picot, ch 1) around, sl st in 1st sc, finish off.
