Granny in the Middle Square
8 inches, starts with a granny square, then goes from there. 
Special Stitch:
Shell: (dc, ch 1) 3 times and dc once more in designated st.

The first 3 rounds are done as a traditional Granny Square, starting round 1 with CS, round 2 is CV and round 3 is CS. Finish off.

Round 4: Join CV to any corner, ch 1[5 sc in corner, sc in each dc and sp across] 4 times, join to 1st sc.

Round 5: Sl st to 3rd sc of corner, (ch 4, dc, ch 1, dc) in corner, [*(skip next sc, sc in next sc, skip next sc, shell in next sc) 3 times, skip next sc, sc in next sc*, (dc, ch 1) 5 times and dc once more in next sc (corner)] 3 times and * to * once more, (dc, ch 1) 3 times in 3rd sc of 1st corner, join to 3rd ch of 1st ch 4. Finish off CV

Round 6: Join CS to any corner, ch 1[3 sc in corner, ch 3, (dc in next sc, ch 2, skip next dc, sp, and dc of shell, sc in next sp on top of shell, ch 2) 3 times, dc in next sc, ch 3] 4 times, join to 1st sc.

Round 7: Sl st to next sc (corner), (ch 3, dc, ch 2, 2dc) in corner sc, [*(3dc in next sp) twice, (2dc in next sp) 4 times, (3dc in next sp) twice*, (2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in corner sc] 3 times, and * to * once more. Join to 3rd ch of beg ch 3. Finish off CS

If your square is only 7½ inches, don't finish off 7 and do round 8
Round 8: Ch 1, sc in each st around and 3 sc in corner. Finish off and weave, weave, weave!!!
